Halloween 2007

Since Olivia was barely 9 months old last Halloween, I definitely consider this her first real Halloween, and it was fun to watch her experience the excitement of the season for the first time. A few weeks ago we checked a book out from the library about Halloween, and Olivia was becoming intrigued by the idea of trick-or-treating and getting candy. Her curiosity was piqued once all the local stores began putting out displays complete with life size zombies, mummies, and the like. She began referring to all such crazy Halloween figures as "silly guys" or "funny guys." Conveniently, this past month it has been easy to get her excited about a trip to the grocery store by instead pitching it to her that we were going to see all the "funny guys." The season became even more magical as everyone on our street started putting out displays of pumpkins, lights, and ghosts. Everyday Olivia has been asking to take walks to go see all the pumpkins and lights.

Even with all the build up, I don't think Olivia really believed us when we told her she could go knock on people's doors and get candy. She quickly got in to the whole trick-or-treating idea, and became a pro at digging into candy baskets and dropping the loot in her plastic pumpkin. Unfortunately, she would get a little door shy and never said "trick-or-treat," "thank you," or "happy Halloween" as we had so dutifully practiced before leaving home. She did, however, learn to give each person a high-five after they gave her candy--better than nothing I guess.

Our night started out with a nutritious, well-balanced meal of "mummy-dogs." Since Olivia can't eat anything with any dairy or egg ingredients it can sometimes be tricky to find meals she will actually eat for dinner. Of course she loves hot dogs, and luckily crescent rolls have no milk or egg ingredients. She loved eating these "silly mummy guys" for dinner.

Even Mike enjoys a good Ball Park dog every now and then.




After dinner Olivia got dressed in her cheetah/cat costume. And Mommy tried to get some mascara whiskers on her face--not an easy task with a squirmy toddler.

We had fun visiting a few friends in the neighborhood and then called it a night. Mommy and Daddy get to enjoy all the chocolate and nut candies due to Olivia's allergies. But, she managed to come away from the night with a good supply of suckers and other fruity junk. Here she is enjoying her loot:
